Trump’s election is bad news for Cuba

As Cuban Americans, we feel a profound connection to our homeland—a bond that transcends borders and brings with it a sense of responsibility. Today, that responsibility calls on us to stand against policies that harm Cuba and isolate its people from progress and opportunity. With Donald Trump’s recent re-election, we’re reminded of the painful consequences his administration’s policies had on Cuba, as he unleashed a wave of sanctions and restrictions that heightened suffering and fractured families.

During Trump’s last term, Cuban Americans watched as families were separated by travel bans and resource restrictions. Basic necessities became harder to obtain, and ordinary life was disrupted. The sanctions cut off vital remittances that many families on the island relied upon, and business opportunities were stifled, preventing the Cuban economy from reaching its potential. Trump’s policies hurt families, silenced hope, and took away opportunities for growth and self-sufficiency, instead pushing the island further into economic hardship.

As Cuban Americans, we have a choice. We can allow these damaging policies to continue, or we can advocate for an approach that truly uplifts Cuban people and respects their sovereignty. Supporting the well-being of our homeland doesn’t mean endorsing blockades that starve the island of resources and stifle its people’s future. Instead, it means advocating for an end to the blockade—a policy that, for over six decades, has brought about little more than hardship and suffering. It means pushing for a stance towards Cuba that champions genuine progress, human connection, and the opportunity for Cuba to thrive independently.

Our cultural and familial ties give us a unique voice in this conversation, and it’s time to use it. Ending the blockade isn’t just about lifting economic restrictions; it’s about supporting Cuba’s right to self-determination and promoting the kind of humanitarian values we hold dear. A future where we can support our families and see the Cuban people flourish is possible—but it requires us to come together and stand firmly against policies that only bring suffering to our homeland.

We urge all Cuban Americans to unite against the blockade and to advocate for policies that genuinely support the Cuban people. Together, we can envision and work toward a future that reflects the values of compassion, progress, and respect for Cuba’s independence—a future that allows Cuban families, on both sides of the water, to thrive.
